School admission season: A checklist for Rajasthan parents

Education experts say families should look beyond advertisements, rankings and fancy infrastructure and check a school’s recognition, fees, safety and learning environment before taking admission.
One of the first checks should be the school’s recognition and board affiliation. Parents can verify whether a school is affiliated with the board it claims to follow, rather than relying only on information provided during admission counselling.
Fees should also be checked carefully. Parents should ask for a written, itemised fee structure covering tuition, admission charges, annual fees, transport, books, uniform and other compulsory expenses. They should also ask about the refund policy and keep receipts for every payment.
A visit to the school can help parents assess student safety and the learning environment. They can check entry and exit arrangements, school transport, emergency procedures, supervision during dispersal, playground facilities and whether the school has a system for dealing with bullying and student complaints.
Parents should also ask about teachers and class sizes, including teacher qualifications, staff stability, remedial support and counselling facilities. Instead of relying only on board results, families can ask how the school supports students who need additional academic or emotional help.
